You don’t have to use hny, you can choose any shortcut but ideally use one thats easy to remember and then click Add. 
Once you have done this, every time you type hny followed by a space it will automatically insert Happy new year!

By the time you get to the end of January, this could save you at least a minute, however if you are one of those people still saying happy new year in February this could save you hours!!

Obviously Happy new year! is not the only shortcut you can use. Just think of any long words or phrases you type a lot and make a shortcut.

Here are a few examples.

kr – Kind regards
hnd – Have a nice day
hnw – Have a nice weekend
ihq – I hope you find our quotation acceptable and look forward to hearing from you

You can do exactly the same thing on iPhone or iPad by going to
Settings – General – Keyboard – Text Replacement
however, if you have iCloud then the shortcuts you add will be available for all your devices regardless of which device you enter them.
